As part of the Summer of Heritage timetable, I attended the tour of the Seapoint Martello Tower in Monkstown.
I had never been in a Martello Tower before, so I was curious as to what it would be like. The Tour Guide Jim, was correct when he mentioned that they are seen as mysterious. Growing up I was always intrigued by them.
Jim informed the people gathered for the tour, about just how good at their one job, there towers are and how they evolved.
According to one lady on this tour, this tower was a sweet shop when she was a child, which is a stark change from the function for which it was built.
The Summer of Heritage is a very interesting programme of free tours in some buildings that are normally closed. This is an annual series of events and is well worth taking part in.
