TPE, the first app I mention, is fantastically helpful at working out where sunrise and sunset are, and when used with Skyfire, it should be able to help you work out what the colours will be like in the sunrise or sunset. The Lee Stopper guide is a crucial if you use Lee Filters to help balance the light in your images. Google Maps is obvious. The weather forecast in conjunction with the tide forecast is helpful, if you are working near the coast.
